How Learning In Autumn Can Make You A Better Driver

We have previously written about how summer is a good time to learn to drive and pass your test and dry conditions and good daylight can indeed make matters easier. Now that autumn has arrived, however, that opportunity is a long way off.

However, that does not mean it isn’t a good idea to have lessons in autumn. Indeed, learning to deal with some of the extra challenges that drivers can face at this time of year will make you a better all-round driver when you pass.

The kind of things you may face on driving lessons in West London this autumn can be highlighted by the RAC guide to autumn driving.

Reflecting on the weather conditions, it stated: “Autumn brings a drop in temperature and a whole host of variable weather conditions that can affect driving, such as rain, fog, wind, maybe even snow and ice.”

This is in addition to the fact that nights are longer, so night driving will become a far more important skill than in summer.

Braking and doing an emergency stop will be among the skills you need to learn, so being able to do so in trickier road conditions will be important for you as a driver to avoid accidents, whether or not you encounter difficult conditions on your test.

Some might imagine it is harder to pass a test in autumn or winter. But this isn’t borne out by the government’s data on pass rates.

For instance, the data for 2024 revealed that the highest pass rate in any month was 49.3 per cent in December, while the lowest was 46.8 per cent in February. Even this small variation is not necessarily typical, as the pass rate for February 2025 was 48.8 per cent.

Summer’s easy driving conditions may have come and gone, but that is no reason not to have lessons in autumn. Indeed, it may prove the best time of all for you in the long run.
