Tips For Driving In Icy Conditions

People taking driving lessons in Greenford this week might be concerned about the latest weather forecasts, after experts predicted icy conditions for the next few days.

There is set to be a big change in weather as a result of a chilly wind from the Arctic causing temperatures to drop, snow to fall and roads to freeze.

Of course, no instructor would take a learner out if conditions were too dangerous to drive, but if you do have a lesson during this chilly period, it is still worth being extra cautious when behind the wheel.

The RAC reminded motorists to look well ahead for hazards, particularly patches of ice, which can be hard to spot. Black ice is transparent and can appear glossy, it makes the road look ‘wet’ and glints in the sunlight.

It is important to keep speed much lower than usual and drive in a higher gear to improve grip on the ice.

“Accelerate, brake, steer and change gear as smoothly as possible to reduce the risk of a skid,” the RAC advised, adding it is necessary to increase braking distance too.

Leave up to ten times the recommended gap with the car in front, even if there is no ice on the road, as tyres lose their grip in cold weather.

If you do happen to drive over black ice and swerve, keep the steering wheel straight and do not press the brakes. You can use gears to slow down instead, and gently steer into the skid.
